the rain in spain falls mainly on..well...everywhere
so apparently we brought the roman rain back to spain. i don't know if it's made any news at all in the US, but spain has been getting a tonnn of rain. i don't know why that would make news in america, but whatever...cordoba has apparently had so much rain that cars are halfway under water! and it definitely seems to be becoming a trend that i go into the metro when it's slightly drizzling, and i come out of the metro to find myself caught in very very hard rain! grr....the other night i had to run to my house because i didn't think i'd be needing an umbrella...
but anyways, other than the rain life has been good. amy's family (aka mom and sister) are on vacation this week, so we took advantage by getting together, her me and tim, at her house to have a nice evening without spanish señoras! we tried to cook our own dinner, but ended up massacring our chicken...but it was okay in the end because we had yummy soup amy's mom had madein advance, and delicous pastries from across the street! oh my, so good...but it was really fun just hanging out, watching spanish tv, chatting, etc. it's nice to be independent from the ever present spanish señoras!
yesterday was a holiday in spain! i believe it was thought to be the day america was discovered by columbus, which just coincidentally happens to be the material i am desperately trying to get through in my Cronicas de Indias book for my latinamerican lit class. it's actually very interesting to see what the spanish opinions are on the discovery of america, and all the political stuff that gets in the way of what really happened...nobody really knows alot about columbus, and apparently it's hard to believe any of his writings because he just wanted people to think he'd found something he may have not really found. but then the cronistas for the spanish crown just wanted spain to look awesome...so there's bias everywhere! but anyways, the point was we didn't have class. so me and a bunch of people went to the palau of national catalan art because we thought it would be free on holidays (yes that's the building in like all of my pictures!). so we waited in an enormous line, for 50 minutes, just to find out it wasn't free, and then we bagged it because after all that time in line two of the girls had to go home for lunch anyway...so that was lame, but kind of funny to look back on. so then me, tim, alex, and amy went to the joan miro foundation museum instead, which also wasn't free, but by that time we didn't care because we had more interest in that museum! it was pretty cool, but it kept going and going...miro's stuff is very pretty though, even if i don't understand it at all.
me and amy also went to kol nidre services the other night...was that last night?? yes, i think it was. it was longer than the other service, aka a bit boring, but i survived. it's always a good laugh when you try to do the congregation chanting response things and we can't keep up with how fast the spanish people read the spanish lines. so we always end up still reading after everyone else has finished, and reading badly at that. heehee...we made plans to break the fast today with the two girls from penn we met at services, which we ended up doing! but oh man, i was so hungry all day...i finalized my classes with the BCA director, and read like 25 pages of that cronicas de indias book, which took a lot more time than you'd think.
(by the way, through all this it continued to rain/drizzle/pour).
dinner with the penn girls was alright...i had more fun just talking with amy than with the penn girls. they're nice, but a little snotty. i'd definitely hang out with them one night just for something different, but i wouldn't want to spend a ton of time with them. but it's nice to have other people to hang out with!
right now i'm back in my room after getting poured on, maybe considering reading some more about columbus...oh joy! :-P
